Managing the Consequences of a Pandemic Outbreak

On Thursday the 12th of February 2015, Inside Government will be hosting a bespoke forum on how to effectively respond to the threat of pandemics. This forum will be limited to just 60 attendees.
In August 2014 Public Health England published their Pandemic Influenza Response Plan 2014 which aims to ensure that the country is fully prepared and able to respond quickly and effectively to pandemics. Furthermore, to support planning by commissioners and providers, in July 2014 NHS England produced an update guidance document on the overview of the current status of the work around Pandemic Influenza preparedness.
With this government policy in mind, delegates attending the, 'Emergency Preparedness: Effectively Responding to the Threat of Pandemics' will be able to examine the latest government strategies on responding to pandemics, as well as explore best practice strategies on contingency planning from industry experts.
KEY SPEAKER - NHS ENGLAND
Bob Winter, the National Clinical Director for Emergency Preparedness & Critical Care at NHS England will deliver the afternoon keynote at the forum on responding to incidents. His session will look to examine the following points:
- Dealing with an outbreak of an infectious disease while maintaining services
- Enabling agencies to share a common purpose and to co-ordinate Emergency Preparedness,Resilience and Response (EPRR) activities
- The role of the accountable emergency officers in ensuring the EPRR activities
- Forming local health resilience partnerships (LHRPs) to ensure effective local response to pandemics
- Involving local partners in preparing for the eventuality of pandemic outbreaks
- Distributing antiviral medicine and developing new drugs
- Ensuring patient safety in hospitals during an infection outbreak

Professor Paul Cosford, Director for Health Protection and Medical Director at Public Health England will deliver a session on preparing for and responding to a pandemic, his session will cover:
- Working in partnership to effectively respond to health emergencies
- Understanding the 5 pandemic phases: detection, assessment, treatment, escalation and recovery (DATER)
- Defining the roles and responsibilities of different organisations in handling an event of a pandemic: The Pandemic influenza response plan 2014
- Examining the November 2011 UK Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Strategy and the December 2012 Pandemic Influenza Communications Strategy
- Effectively working with the private sector to prepare for pandemics
- Providing health protection services, expertise and advice and co-ordinating responses to pandemic outbreak
