Supplementary Modules part 1 (SM1-3)

Advanced Patient Blood Management (SM1)

This module is made up of one presentation

Full module description SM1

Learning Outcomes
You will be expected to:

  1. Identify, describe, explain and categorise the development and use of alternatives and adjuncts to transfusion including patients where transfusion is not possible.

  2. Determine, describe and explain provision of non-acute transfusion services outside the hospital setting including specific challenges eg. cold chain and traceability and benefits that the establishment of this service would present.

  3. Describe and explain the use of intraoperative cell salvage with particular reference to conservation strategies and patients who refuse transfusion.  Describe the challenges and benefits to its use.

  4. Discuss the importance and impact of non-medical authorisation of blood transfusion and the role of the practitioner in this programme.

  5. Discuss the management of patients who refuse blood and components. Refer to relevant guidance and policies.

Emergency Transfusion Medicine (SM2)

This module is made up of one presentation.

Full module description SM2

Learning Outcomes
You will be expected to:

  1. Describe and explain the following with regard to major haemorrhage for a range of different patient groups:

    - The physiology of shock and trauma induced coagulopathy.

    - The acute management of major haemorrhage including pharmacological treatments and transfusion management.

    - The use of near patient testing in major haemorrhage.

    - Emergency transfusion outside the hospital setting and selection of appropriate blood components.

  2. Discuss the use of emergency pre-hospital transfusion including the role of the emergency helicopter services and how this is managed.

  3. Discuss and critically assess guidance for blood used in emergency transfusion specifically for selection and volume of appropriate blood components.

  4. Describe, explain and categorise point of care viscoelastic tests of coagulation.

  5. Describe and explain management of major incidents with particular reference to the role of the hospital transfusion team.

Haematology Patient Management (SM3)

This module is made up of two presentations.

Full module description SM3

Learning Outcomes
You will be expected to:

  1. Understand haemopoiesis and abnormal haemopoeisis.

  2. Determine and explain the problems associated with chronic transfusion such as iron overload in haematological diseases.

  3. Describe, evaluate and recommend strategies for transfusion management of patients with warm and cold auto-immune haemolytic anaemia, auto-immune thrombocytopenic purpura (AITP), bleeding, TTP, HUS & MAHA.

  4. Evaluate and recommend tranfusion management strategies for a range of inherited haemoglobinopathies.

  5. Describe specific transfusion requirements - irradiated products, CMV negative, HLA matched and washed red cells.

  6. Explain and categorise the principles and practice of transfusion support in haemopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplantation patients including pre/peri/post treatment management and guidelines.

  7. Describe and explain ongoing treatment and support strategies required for the management of multi-transfused patients with antibodies and the challenges of providing appropriate antigen negative units.
