Karen is the Specialist Transfusion Practitioner (TP) within North Bristol NHS Trust where she has been in post since 2004. Upon completion of her undergraduate Biomedical Science degree. Karen undertook a PhD in Immunology. She then briefly worked in Platelet and Granulocyte Immunology (PGI) within NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), during which time she completed her Biomedical Scientist state registration.
Karen has sat on several regional and national transfusion-related groups including the South-West Regional Transfusion Team/Committee, Regional Transfusion Education sub-group, JPAC Standing Advisory Committee on Information Technology, and has contributed to several National Comparative Audit Project Groups.
Karen joined the BBTS TP Special Interest Group (SIG) in 2022 and became Chair of this group in 2023. Since then, she has become further involved within BBTS, now also sitting on the Annual Conference Committee, the Communications Committee and is a Council Member.
Karen represents BBTS within the National Transfusion Practitioner Network (NTPN) and also within the Steering Group for the TP Professional Development Framework as part of T2024/Transfusion Transformation. She is also a member of the Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) Haemovigilance group.
