Lead Transfusion Practitioner, University Hospitals Birmingham
Lance was previously a Senior Biomedical Scientist and Training Officer working in a busy hospital blood bank in the Midlands, before recently starting a new role as a Lead Transfusion Practitioner. Training is a central part of his role, and he is strongly motivated by the positive impact that high‑quality training can have on practice and patient safety. Blood transfusion is widely recognised as a high‑risk discipline, and Lance is driven by supporting biomedical scientists, transfusion practitioners, and clinical colleagues to become competent, confident, and resilient in their roles.
He is an active IBMS verifier and specialist examiner and has worked extensively to obtain specialist and advanced qualifications to support his professional practice. Over the past two years, Lance has become increasingly involved in the clinical aspects of transfusion through engagement with clinical teams on complex patient cases, delivery of training, and attendance at local MDT meetings.
Having experienced the challenges of transitioning into a senior role himself, Lance values the importance of guidance and mentorship. As a member of the Early Career Professionals Committee, he is keen to contribute meaningfully, particularly through initiatives that connect early career professionals with experienced BBTS mentors.
