Ellie Delahay

PhD student - University of Aberdeen

Ellie is a Medical Research Scotland-funded PhD student at the University of Aberdeen, where she investigates novel therapeutic approaches for atherosclerosis via the inhibition of extracellular vesicle intercellular communication. Her research focuses on understanding how extracellular vesicles contribute to vascular inflammation and disease progression, with the aim of identifying new strategies to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Prior to commencing her PhD, Ellie worked as an Associate Practitioner within the Component Development and Research Department at the Welsh Blood Service following completion of her MSc in Biomedical Science (Immunohaematology) at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Her master's research investigated red blood cell-derived extracellular vesicles and was recognised with the Margaret Kenwright Award at the 2025 BBTS Annual Conference. As an HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist, Ellie brings a strong transfusion science background to her current work in cardiovascular and metabolic disease research. Her experience across both blood services and academic research has fostered a particular interest in translational science and the application of transfusion research principles to wider areas of human health and disease. 

As a member of the BBTS Early Career Professionals Council, Ellie is passionate about supporting students and early career scientists, promoting access to research opportunities, and increasing visibility of the diverse career pathways available within transfusion and blood sciences.
