Alexa Magno

Research Scientist, Welsh Blood Service and Laboratory Manager, Velindre University NHS Trust

Alexa is a Research Scientist at the Welsh Blood Service, having previously worked as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the RCI Laboratory, the reference laboratory for Wales. During this time, she also served as Quality Lead, supporting compliance with ISO 15189:2022 standards.

Her interest in research developed during her MSc at the University of Greenwich, where she completed her dissertation on platelet receptor expression in cold‑stored platelet concentrates in collaboration with the Component Development at the Welsh Blood Service. This experience inspired her to pursue a research‑focused career aimed at improving transfusion practice and patient care.

Alexa is a recipient of the Margaret Kenwright Award 2026, when she joined the committee and currently works in a dual role, managing laboratory operations at the Velindre Cancer Centre Clinical Trials Unit while undertaking transfusion‑related research bridging blood transfusion and cancer care.

As someone from a minority ethnic background, Alexa is passionate about promoting equality, visibility, and opportunity within science, and is committed to supporting and empowering early career professionals, particularly in blood transfusion.
