Advanced Specialist BMS, IGBRL, NHSBT
Abi is based in Bristol and works in Red Cell Reference (RCR), the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory. Her day‑to‑day role involves complex red cell antibody investigations and the identification of rare and unusual red cell types, with a particular interest in the Scianna blood group system. She began her career in a hospital laboratory working across haematology and transfusion before joining RCR on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract. Seven years later, she is now an Advanced Specialist Biomedical Scientist in RCR and continues to find herself learning new things every day.
After receiving the Margaret Kenwright Award in 2024, Abi was invited to join the Early Career Professionals Committee, which she was delighted to accept. She is especially passionate about all aspects of transfusion science and values creating opportunities for others to learn, grow, and share their knowledge. Abi strongly believes in enabling and empowering individuals who are early in their careers or embarking on new pathways within transfusion science, while supporting the development of strong professional relationships across transfusion and related fields.
