My journey into Biomedical Science started in Portugal, but it was when I moved to the UK that my career really began to take shape. I’ve been fortunate to work across several disciplines, including Haematology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology, which gave me a strong foundation and helped me understand how everything connects in the lab. Over time, I found myself drawn more and more to Blood Transfusion, and it quickly became the area I was most passionate about. What really attracted me to transfusion was how directly it impacts patient care. It’s fast-paced, requires critical thinking, and every decision matters. Knowing that the work we do can make an immediate, life-saving difference is incredibly rewarding, and it’s what continues to motivate me every day. Throughout my career, from St George’s Hospital to Luton and Dunstable, then Guy’s and St Thomas’, and now in my current senior role, I’ve gained experience in both routine and complex transfusion work. These days, alongside the technical side, I spend a lot of my time leading on training and supporting staff development. I’ve completed my MSc in Healthcare Management, as well as a Certificate of Expert Practice (CEP) in Training, which reflects my strong interest in education and leadership.

I’m an IBMS member and actively involved in the profession, including marking Registration and Specialist Portfolios. I really enjoy mentoring colleagues, helping them grow in confidence, and creating a positive, supportive team environment where everyone feels valued.

Outside of the lab, I love running because it helps me clear my mind and reset after busy shifts, and it’s something that keeps me grounded and energised. I’m really proud to be part of the transfusion community and excited to continue developing both professionally and personally in this field.
