These are a really useful tool for everyone involved in safe and appropriate transfusion. We talk about PBM and distribute the PBM bookmarks at our induction sessions for doctors. Getting the information across to the clincial areas is difficult. Staff are busy and won't necessarily read information sent to them. A face to face approach would be the best way to disseminate all the information that the PBM team produce but practically this is difficult.
I would like to see more of this information taught in medical school. We find that newly qualified doctors have varying degrees of knowledge regarding transfusion.
We have recently introduced a smart fridge, the laboratory no longer have control over red cell transfusion requests. We will be auditing the appropriateness of the transfusions of red cells taken from the smart fridge.
