#BBTS2016 - Programme Categories Explained

The 2016 BBTS Annual Conference Scientific Programme has evolved. This year each session has been assigned at least one category from the following headings:

Transfusing Wisely | Blood Safety | Education | Quality | Donors and Blood Donation | Diagnostics, Science and Technology

The interactive programme, available here, allows you to easily navigate sessions by date, or by category, enabling you to quickly identify areas of interest and manage your time more effectively.

Kate Pendry, chair of our Scientific Meetings Administration Committee, has provided brief descriptions of each category below:

Transfusing Wisely

This category is all about the laboratory / clinical interface in transfusion: it is about patient blood management, optimising the care of patient who might need transfusion. Patient Blood Management puts the patient at the heart of decisions made about blood transfusion to ensure they receive the best treatment including alternatives to transfusion and avoidable, inappropriate use of blood and blood components is reduced.

Blood Safety

This category covers the approaches to ensuring that blood is as safe as it can be from donor selection to testing, processing, manufacturing and storage / temperature control.  It also covers processes in the hospital transfusion laboratory, clinical decision making, careful prescribing and monitoring of patients.
