Jennifer Allen
National Bacteriology Laboratory, NHS Blood and Transplant

Intended Audience: TBC

Learning Objectives:

  1. To understand the impact of donor behaviour on blood safety
  2. Awareness of risk reduction measures for hepatitis E.
  3. Knowledge of the efficacy of pathogen inactivation systems versus bacterial contamination of platelets.

Brief Description:

The session will provide updates on current and recent work emanating from the UK governments' advisory committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs (SaBTO).

Donor selection criteria are currently under review, and outcomes from a behavioural survey will be presented.  The prevalence of hepatitis E virus is rising and selective testing of blood donations was introduced in early 2016 - a review of the epidemiology and the development of clinical guidelines will be presented.

Pathogen inactivation of platelet concentrates is a potential mitigation of the risk of bacterial contamination.  Data will be presented from laboratory studies on the efficacy of two licensed systems versus species of bacteria that have been found in platelet concentrates.
