Learnbloodtransfusion e-learning package and online recording and assessment system (ORAS Gold)
What is it? A modular transfusion e-learning package and ORAS Gold learning management system, developed by the Scottish Better Blood Transfusion Programme, is now freely accessible for hospitals in England and North Wales via the National Blood Service(NBS)
Who is it for? It targets all staff groups involved in the transfusion process - medical staff, nurses and midwives, phlebotomists, porters and students and can be accessed via the Internet at www.learnbloodtransfusion.org.uk
There are 3 levels: Safe Transfusion Practice: Level 1 This is the first level in the series and is aimed at all staff groups involved in the administration of blood components, including medical staff, nursing and midwifery staff, operating department practitioners (ODP’s), clinical support workers and porters Safe Transfusion Practice: level 2 This level covers the constituents of blood components and summarises the indications for use, the therapeutic benefits and risks and the management of adverse events. This unit has been designed for clinicians, nurses and ODP’s who regularly use blood components in their day to day practice Safe Transfusion Practice: Level 3 This unit is under development in Scotland and deals with issues such as the use of transfusion guidelines and triggers, informed consent and alternatives to allogeneic transfusion. This unit is designed for clinicians and nurses regularly involved in the management of patients requiring transfusion support.
