BBTS Specialist Certificate Examination
The Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice Examination is run twice a year in May and November and the exact dates for each year are on the up-to-date registration forms below. It is currently held at five centres at Leeds, London, Bristol, Edinburgh and Belfast.
The examination is open to both members of the Society and members of other appropriate professional bodies, e.g. IBMS. It is recommended that two year’s post-registration transfusion or components production laboratory experience is needed prior to taking the examination as it should be equivalent to having completed 400 hours of study. The examination fee is £100 per candidate for BBTS members and £130 for non-members..
Modules
The Specialist Certificate Course contains three modules:

A module for Hospital Blood Bank Practice & Immunohaematology |

A module for Donation Processing & Testing |
The examination will consist of four, one hour written examinations, all taken on the same day

Multiple Choice Question paper covering the basic knowledge in Module 1 |

‘Short answer’ papers covering the basic knowledge in Module 1 |

Data interpretation’ paper covering Module 1 and a choice of questions for Modules 2 and 3 |

‘Case studies’ paper covering Module 1 with a choice of questions for Modules 2 and 3 |
There will not be a practical examination as technical competence will be gained during the two years of working in a laboratory and will be recorded in your personal development portfolio.
