BBTS Bursaries

The society established the BBTS Bursaries scheme in 1999 to fund travel scholarships and other bursaries to be awarded to members (and in some cases non-members) of the society to further their knowledge and experience in blood transfusion medicine. A bursaries committee has been established by Council to oversee the allocation of travel scholarships and other bursaries. The current Chair of the Bursaries committee is Sue Redfearn.

There are currently three main categories of bursaries awarded to individuals on an annual basis, these are:
Travel Scholarships

2. ASM Free Places for ‘Young Scientists’

Margaret Kenwright Symposium
The Society has perpetuated the name of Margaret Kenwright, who devoted so much of her life to teaching young scientists the importance of good practice in Transfusion Science, by the establishment of the Margaret Kenwright Award (1986). Since 1998 the Society has held The Margaret Kenwright Young Scientists Symposium, held within the Annual Scientific Meeting. The Young Scientists bursaries are awarded to those individuals selected to present their work at the Margaret Kenwright Young Scientists session at the BBTS ASM, to ensure that they can attend the meeting. The number of these bursaries awarded will vary according to the number of presentations selected by the ASM Organising Committee and is to be agreed by the bursaries committee.

BBTS ASM Free Places for Junior Staff
Junior Staff bursaries are awarded to enable individuals working at junior staff grades in transfusion medicine to experience the BBTS ASM. The number of bursaries to be offered will be proposed by the bursaries committee and agreed by Council annually and will depend on funds available and the number of free places offered to ‘Young Scientists’. Applicants must be working at junior grades in transfusion medicine e.g. Trainee BMS or BMS1, MLA, Grade A clinical scientist, junior nursing and training medical grades.
