BBTS Awards
James Blundell Award

The James Blundell Award was introduced in 1984 and is given for original research resulting in an important and significant contribution to the body of medical and/or scientific knowledge within the field of blood transfusion, or for research which has resulted in a major contribution to the understanding and practice of blood transfusion. The recipient shall have an international reputation within his/her particular field. The recipient need not be a member of the Society.

The Kenneth Goldsmith Award

The Kenneth Goldsmith Award was introduced in 1984 and is given for original research within the field of blood transfusion together with contributions to blood transfusion in general, either in the medical or scientific fields. The recipient shall reside in the United Kingdom and be a member of the Society. The recipient shall have a high reputation as a worker within the field of blood transfusion or in a closely related field, such that his or her work has been a substantial contribution to the understanding and practice of blood transfusion.

Race and Sanger Award

The Society has perpetuated the names of Robert Race and Ruth Sanger, who contributed immeasurably to the study of blood groups, by the establishment of the Race and Sanger Award. The recipient of the award will be under 40 years of age and will have involvement in research and development and be making an outstanding medical/scientific contribution to transfusion medicine/science.

International Woman in Transfusion Award

In 2004, for the first time in their collective histories, three of the major transfusion medicine organizations in the world - the AABB, the BBTS and ISBT were led by women professionals. To commemorate this occurrence, these 3 organizations agreed to establish this unique award to honor women for lifetime achievements in transfusion medicine and science. Through this award, the three organizations will strive to regularly acknowledge women professionals whose cumulative record in original research, innovative educational methods or outstanding clinical practice demonstrates important and significant contributions to the body of medical and/or scientific knowledge or to the understanding and practice of transfusion medicine. The recipient must be a Female physician or scientist holding an advanced degree (such as MD/DO, MBBS, FIBMS, PhD, DSc, MSc or equivalent) and be a Member of at least one of the three societies AABB, BBTS or ISBT.

BBTS Gold Medal

The Gold Medal, which was introduced in 1997, is awarded to an individual for their exceptional and long standing services to the Society and to the practice of blood transfusion in the UK . The decision to award the BBTS Gold Medal award is made by the BBTS Council

Nominations for the James Blundell and Kenneth Goldsmith Awards can be made by any BBTS member. Each nominee must be proposed by at least two BBTS members. The nomination should be accompanied by detailed background information (maximum 100 words) on the reasons for the nomination.

An awards committee consisting of the president, the honorary secretary, the scientific secretary, the past president and the chair of the scientific meetings administration committee (SMAC) will consider the nominations and decide by a voting procedure on the award winners.
